What Do You Need to Know About Rum?

W&L Delivery carries a variety of wine, spirit alcohols, champagne, and rums. For example, we carry Bacardi Rum and some different options that are distilled from sugarcane & molasses. Before sugarcane can be harvested, it must mature for at least ten months to two years. Rum has had a reputation for being associated with pirates, sailors, and Americans in the old days.

The process of making rum begins with sugarcane, then sugarcane juice is extracted and fermented with yeast. It is then used to convert sugar into alcohol.

After fermentation, the liquid is distilled in order to remove unwanted substances that were not fermented. This can be done through a variety of ways including pot stills, column stills, or vacuum distillation. Column still distilling brings out the body and flavors of the rum. Pot still distillation is what yields rum with a richer flavor. .Distillation is done in a series of stills with each successive distillation adding ethanol and water vapor to the mixture. At the end of the process, distilled rum has a lower percentage of water than raw rum. Rums are typically aged in oak barrels for up to 3 years, but some are aged for much longer.

Rum goes through distillation and aging but is then blended after its aged. The creator of light rums will extract the color left over from the rum aging process, while darker rums will be mixed with caramel to modify their color .The fermentation process begins with molasses, which is first boiled in water to create a thick syrup. The simmering syrup is laden with yeast and then gradually cooled on the drum of a still. The yeast then clumps into clusters called “kernels” that release alcohol as they ferment. The fermentation process is allowed to continue for about a week.

Why Choose Rum Among Other Liquors?

Rum is made by distillation, in a process involving fermentation and filtration into a pure alcohol, which it then undergoes aging. It comes in transparent liquid form when made properly. In the Caribbean, it has long been a customary and cultural drink. However, it is now widely manufactured and consumed all over the world.  Rums are typically from the Caribbean, Central America, South America, and southern Europe. The most famous rums are those from the Caribbean.

Rum is a popular drink in most West Indian islands and the Maritimes. This beverage is intimately linked to piracy, the royal navy, and slavery. That said, it has also been involved with organized crime, military insurgencies, and slavery throughout its history across the globe since that time.

Rum is used in many of the most popular drinks today, including rum punch. It’s also used in desserts, ice creams, cakes, and teas to achieve its desired taste profile. Rum is one of the most popular alcoholic drinks and it’s used in cocktails for mixed drinks such as daiquiris and mojitos.

Choose the Best Type of Rum to Ireland

Rum is produced in more than 80 countries employing a variety of procedures, including different forms of fermentation, different types of distillation, various blending styles, and a variety of aging techniques. The majority of rum falls into one of a few basic classifications. Let’s take a look at some of the famous types of rums.

1. White Rum

White rum is traditionally clear in color and has a lighter texture than dark or gold rums. It can often be used in drinks that may require less flavor intensity.

2. Gold Rum

Over time, rums generally develop golden-amber hues, and the flavors are usually richer. Rums of this color are common in drinks like daiquiris.

3. Dark Rum

Dark rum is a term used to distinguish aged rums from light varieties. The process of aging darkens the spirit, but it can also affect other characteristics such as color. Long periods of time are sometimes required for aging.

4. Black Rum

Black rums are the darkest, most prosperous, and most full-bodied rums. They can be used in a range of different recipes because they have a powerful tropical flavor. These rums are commonly paired with other types of rum to create complex flavor profiles.

5. Premium Aged Rum

Rum takes years to develop, so it has a significant flavor profile. The aging process can also produce a smooth & subtle change.

Rum distillers tend to age their product in barrels for a long time before packaging it. This is an old method, used with exquisite results. It is a lengthy process that can be costly in terms of storage. In the Caribbean, rum is often distilled from molasses, a byproduct of sugar production. The resulting product has a natural sweetness and very little color.

Latin America offers many quality brands of rum. Listed below are some rums that have earned rave reviews and are only available at W&L Delivery.
