The History of Tequila and What Makes It One of Mexico's National Spirits

Tequila is a type of alcoholic beverage made from the blue agave plant, primarily in the region surrounding the city of Tequila, in western Mexico. It is a clear liquid that has an alcohol content of between 35% and 40%.

The name tequila is derived from the town where it was first produced. The earliest mention of this drink comes from 1696 when a Spanish document mentions it as being made with agave distillate.

What is the Difference Between Blanco, Reposado, Anejo & Extra Anejo?

Blanco is the unaged and unrefined version of tequila. It is clear, but it has not been aged in oak barrels.

Reposado is the aged version of tequila that has been stored in oak barrels for a period of 2 months to 1 year.

Anejo is the aged version of tequila that has been stored in oak barrels for 1-3 years.

Extra Anejo is the aged version of tequila that has been stored in oak barrels for 3-5 years or more.

What does tequila do to your body?

The effects of tequila depend on how much you drink and your weight, sex, age, and sensitivity to alcohol. Generally, tequila will make you feel more relaxed and less inhibited than usual. You might get flushed or have a slight headache but these symptoms are usually mild.

What is the best way to drink tequila?

If you already enjoy tequila in a certain way, you should keep doing it. You know your own tastes, so go ahead and indulge yourself! If you’re unsure about any of these points, let us know. The manner in which you drink tequila is entirely dependent on the type of tequila you buy. Quality tequilas are designed to be sipped, so it is generally recommended that you purchase a quality tequila rather than a mixto for this purpose.

If you’re feeling adventurous, try mixing a little Makers Mark with a bottle of water. That tequila’s taste was finely tuned over time and with meticulous care, so we’re guessing you’ll be surprised at how much you like sipping it straight. If you want to make a blended cocktail, Blanco is the way to go. Because it hasn’t been aged, it mixes well and doesn’t overcomplicate the flavor profile of your drink. When you’re ready to branch out, we recommend a Reposado. It’s aged for two to 12 months and has a more robust flavor that can stand up to mixers like ginger ale or club soda. Añejo should be sipped, not mixed. It’s aged for a minimum of one year, so it’s had time to develop a deeper, more nuanced flavor.

If you want a combination of the two, reposado is the way to go. It has enough taste to enjoy but isn’t overwhelming for a refreshing drink. If you prefer a sweet cocktail like a tequila sunrise, choose a mix. The syrups and juices in these exquisite beverages will disguise any aging flavor, so it’s pointless to spend money on a top-shelf tequila. When it comes to mixed drinks, blanco is the way to go – its unaged flavor won’t interfere with the other ingredients.
